Trends

As I walk through the hall at school i realize how impressionable people are. Including me. There are new trends everyday that ppl spend loads of money on. My question would be is what does God think about this? I know he wants us to be ouselves, but would you concider dressing in the trend as being sinful. I would just like some opinions, NO Fights!

Yeah, Jesus wants use to be ourselves, but He also wants us to be like Him, how our we suppose to be like Him, when we're being someone else? (ie. following a trend)

its not sinful to want to look nice and presentable. And wanting to buy a few things from American Eagle is NOT a sin. But going overboard is not good, but i dont think that is a sin either.

T.C. said...

Well, that all depends... who are you trying to look "nice" for? Because God doesn't care what you look like, he takes you as you are.

Isaiah 1 18-19 - "Come now, let us reason together," says the LORD. "Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool. If you are willing and obedient, you will eat the best from the land.

One more point of thought is, look at these trends, how much LESS clothing can you wear if you're a female? This seems to be the challenge going out to our teen girls.

ok wearing skanky clothing is probably a sin. and its just looking nice in general. What im trying to say IS, yeah God doenst care what you wear but i dont think he minds if we buy the trendy stuff as long as it doesnt become a top priority.

Anonymous said...

but if you want to look nice, who is it for, yourself, your friends, that cute guy, or God? What I think about "trendy"clothes is that people are scared to show their real selves so they pick out something safe, that they know people will like. what would you rather be, looking like everyone one else.. or having God say.. That's my girl/boy.. she/he knows who they are! Not caring what other people think, because I think people dress in stuff from AE to impress other people... why?

phoenix said...

look at what i said, its just in general. i know i, personally, am not dressing for anyone but me, im not trying to "impress" anyone by wearing american eagle clothing i just like the clothes. im still God's child even though i dress in american eagle though.

Anonymous said...

wouldnt God rather have you spending the crazy prices that you do at AE on something better.. like giving it to people with no clothes! You can buy the exact same stuff at like WalMart, the only difference is that it doesn't have the brand name on it!

It is a fact in our society that we must wear clothes. The difficult thing is, how do we know what is appropriate? You have to be dressing for someone, weather it be God or someone else. For example, if you always make sure you have very conservative clothes on, that would be very respectable. If you are dressing in a more provocative manner, why? Are you doing it to try to impress a guy? And if a guy sees a girl dressed in a really low-cut top, what is he going to think? You should never cause anyone to sin. By wearing a V-Neck shirt you may be causing someone to sin! (I know that anything and everything can cause people to sin, but we must try to avoid known causes at all times.)
As for trends, I don't think God cares how you dress or how you cut your hair. He just wants to know that your reasons are right. Do you try to impress someone? Does it make you feel better about yourself when you're wearing an Abercrombie sweater?
Our actions reflect on us, but our personalities and thoughts are our true selves. Focus on the inside first, and then deal with the outside issues.

phoenix said...

i agree with hannah, i dont think God does care how we do our hair or our clothes, but it is important not to intentionally wear something that may cause someone to sin, and dont wear abercrombie or ae just to elevate your self esteem or whatever.

maybe some people dress provocitivly because maybe they just need to feel "loved" which sadly, she doesnt get most of the time. And maybe some people dress in ae or abercrombie or whatever to make them feel good.

The Lord Jesus Christ is the only one we need to be pleasing. Attempting to be Popular or Attractive by buying name brand clothing is a waste of money, and my Favorite quote: "Stop storing your riches on the earth, keep them up in heaven with God" TC.
And we have to admit almost everyone is guilty of purchasing name brand cloths weather to impress or not.

I want to feel loved, but most of the time I don't feel loved at all. I want someone, anyone, to notice me. Wearing certain clothing is just another one of my sad attempts to get this attention. I know it's wrong, but I still do it anyway.

You say it's wrong, now; are you going to do anything about breaking that bondage?

I'm working on it. I've been working on it. Trust me, you can't just wake up one morning and say "I'm going to be myself today and not worry about what anyone else thinks, because I know God loves me." It just isn't that simple.

phoenix said...

i go throguh it too sometimes. i see where you're coming from, anonymous. its hard to go day by day not caring at all when someone looks at your outfit like its the ugliest thing ever or something like that.

T.C. said...

you know what. It is that simple. " all thing are possible " - Jesus.
i have my own struggles, and i know what you mean. It is hard. But that's a lie you're believing. you can do it that quick, you just need to be steadfast and trust God, dig into his word. And man, not only will you have the biggest joy of your life, you'll break that bondag like ripping paper! It's amazing, the power of God is endless. Don't forget it, repent of that bondage and give it to the Father, and believe. Don't pray for that while thinking on your heart " there's no way this can be broken " cause' again, you'd be subject to that lie.

Give it an honest humble try. If it doesn't work, you're doing something wrong. Just PRESS IN!!! haha. i'll be praying for ya'

I personally dont think trends are a sin...if God is all knowing He will forgive our little "sins" because He understands where were coming from. He knows we are not perfect as He.

T.C. said...

ok so now you say it may be a " sin ", but then you clarify that it is a sin. God does not forgive sin without repentance. Repentance is a must, through the blood of Jesus Christ. And yeah, you're totally right, God knows we are no where's near perfect, but remember... what are we called to be? We are called to become perfect, it's not impossible. It's just a lifetime of work. Sinners we came sinners we'll stay, unless we seek the Father.

phoenix said...

yeah...but trends aren't a sin.

Anonymous said...

How do you know?
Can you back up your reasoning?

phoenix said...

sometimes maybe i dont a have some scripture. is that such a crime?

Anonymous said...

no, it just means that you don't know 100% about what you're talking about, until you get some scripture that proves it, then people will listen

T.C. said...

In 1 Peter 3:3-5, Peter tells wives that their, “beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as braided hair and the wearing of gold jewelry and fine clothes. Instead, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight. For this is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God used to make themselves beautiful.”

The trend itself is not a sin, it's the mind behind the trend, that is .. the followers of it. No one is saying you cannot wear the same clothes as someone else, but what is being said is that, when you see some new fashion trend coming out, why do you indulge in it? Because it brings glory to God? or because it brings glory to you? A key phrase i heard at a bible study once would apply here " Me leads to missery ", it's kind of a lil' phrase to keep us in check with who we're giving glory too. If we aren't giving God the glory, we're giving it to Satan.

1 Timothy 2:9-10

9I also want women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or EXPENSIVE CLOTHES, 10but with good deeds, appropriate for women who profess to worship God.
(Thats self explanitory)
Proverbs 1:5

5 let the wise listen and add to their learning,
and let the discerning get guidance
(We need to alow our fellow Christians to Correct and Rebuke us so we can become closer to Jesus. On my Blog this isnt happening, When a person speeks the truth you shun them, I would ask you to reread posts and think before your response. we all have our own opinions but that doesn't mean yours always has to be right.)

Proverbs 1:23

23 If you had responded to my rebuke,
I would have poured out my heart to you
and made my thoughts known to you.

look you know what? Trends come and they go, the thing is, they will always be here and right now i dont think we can stop it. What really matters is whats inside of you. I know that sounds cliche. but its what i truly what i believe. And no, at the present moment, i dont have scripture to back that up. but i know for a fact its true

Anonymous said...

How do you know it's true though? Without God's Word, you basically know nothing, well atleast not about anything important. Trends are not important, as you said, "they come and they go" why not just skip a step and not even fall into them? When you think about it, people don't care if you're wearing AE or somthing expensive, because everyone is wearing it, so you look like everyone else, but people will care if you're wearing clothes that you like, even if there from the salvation army, because you're being yourself, and they WILL respect you for it.
You can buy the clothes that you like, but don't do it for the wrong reason. Don't do it to fit in, or try to be popular. Do you think Jesus cared about what clothes he wore, if they we're what was "in"? I can almost guarentee that he didn't, and aren't we suppose to act like Jesus? hmmmm...

phoenix said...

whatever, this is getting too repetitive.

Anonymous said...

'whatever' ?

phoenix said...

yeah i said 'whatever'. you got a bible verse for that too?

T.C. said...

This has gotten out of hand, not in a way that you've been fighting but that, this debate is over. The question has been answered, and we now know what God's word says, now who wants to argue God's word? If you do then take it up with him.

Trends are not a sin. But the mastermind behind you wanting to join those as a sense of fitting in, that's when you believe the lie that you have to be someone you're not; just so the world can accept you. But jesus' said: "The world cannot hate you; but me it hateth, because I testify of it, that the works thereof are evil." (John 7:7) Now in the context, if you dress a way that our world doesn't approve of because it doesn't "fit in", then guess what it hated Jesus for the same reason, Jesus didn't fit in to what the Pharisee's wanted him to. But if you're dressing to the glory of God, then you don't need to worry, they don't hate you but the one who came before you. No worries though, Jesus was rejected so we didn't have to be.

The whole point of even living, is to Glorify God, so let's dress appropriate to what God tells us ( the verse i gave, and the one Nick put are very good examples. )

There questions answered.

Ecclesiastes 9:8 (Different Translations)

Wear fine clothes, with a splash of cologne!

Dress up, comb your hair, and look your best.

Put on nice clothes and make yourself look good.

What do these mean?
I get confused sometimes when simply looking for an answer.

Hannah

Hannah said...

Soory if I wasn't clear.
All of those """"quotes"""" were from Ecclesiastes 9:8, in various translations.
In KJV it says:
" 8Let thy garments be always white; and let thy head lack no ointment."

So are we sinning when we wear colour?
I just got confused by this verse, because it goes against everything we just discussed.
Opinions?

Ecclesiastes 9:7-9
7 Go, eat your food with gladness, and drink your wine with a joyful heart, for it is now that God favors what you do. 8 Always be clothed in white, and always anoint your head with oil. 9 Enjoy life with your wife, whom you love, all the days of this meaningless life that God has given you under the sun— all your meaningless days. For this is your lot in life and in your toilsome labor under the sun.

verse 8 is still followed through but only in the church(annointing and gowns)

This Post has been ripped in every way and i think (as TC has said) the Question is answered.

This Post is now Finished.

Man oh man. That's not what that is Nick!. Think!?!? White... represents what? Purity. Always be pure...?
